Bengali film ‘Aarohan’ (ascension) has been selected for screening in the prestigious Montreal International Film Festival being held from August 26 to September 6,2010.
‘Aarohan’,starring celebrated actor Soumitra Chatterjee,Sandhya Ray and Rituparna Sengupta, has been slotted in the ‘Focus on World Cinema’ section for screening, the film’s
director Pinaki Choudhury said.
“I was asked by the festival directorate to send even the rough cut when I told them a month ago that some post-editing job still remain to be done. And after seeing the rushes, they intimated me about the film’s selection,” the director said.
The ‘Focus on World Cinema’ section showcases representative films from America,Europe,Asia and Africa. Centred around Benaras, river Ganga and the famous ghats,’Aarohan’ tells the story of the journey of a man at the end of his life who arrived in the holy city with wife Mrinalini (Sandhya Roy) to stay at Moksha Bhavan,a place where dying people are given shelter for one month.
“If they do not die, they have to leave,” Choudhury said adding he got the idea of Moksha Bhavan (salvation home) from a newspaper article on Mukti Bhavan in the holy city where an old person is similarly not allowed to live beyond one month.
“After reading the fascinating article in the paper,I visited the spot and was intrigued by the views and philosophy of the inmates. That is how the story was born.” Choudhury said ‘Aarohan’ was the continuation of a cinematic journey on old age which he had variously dealt with in ‘Ballygunje Court’ and ‘Cancer’ in the past where vignettes of life and death came across through different ways.
The Montreal film festival will also screen an Indo-France co-production,’India by Song’ by Vijay Singh in the documentary section.
